Visual Newsdesk at Digital Donegal Week

July 31, 2017

This was an unusual and exciting project for Visual Newsdesk to undertake, since it involved mentoring students at LYIT to produce and refine their own illustrative social media content for broadcast during the All Aboard 2017 Donegal Digital Week. We also produced our own content to promote and chronicle the week's events, but the greater focus was on empowering students to develop skills in visual digital communications for the future workplace.

The Social Media Project, as it was titled, began several weeks ahead of the Digital Week with a workshop/seminar aimed at introducing the students to different means of creating imagery for social media. We presented a variety of options, then worked with groups using iPads to begin producing social posts that might act as a teaser for the events ahead. In the days before Digital Week, we met up with students again to see how they were getting to grips with the various apps; to look at possible edits to what they had created; and to make an action plan for the week.

From helping out with interactive tweet stations... documenting a three-day long schools animation workshop... capturing and visualising the main points of key discussions and seminars...

...and producing video promos... the students really got stuck in and did some very impressive work using a wide range of tools and approaches.

And here's a selection of the Visual Newsdesk content produced during the week by Maria, Ruth and Therese...
